Mayapur to get largest Vedic temple
TNN
KOLKATA: Come 2016 and Mayapur will feature on the must-visit list of tourists and devotees. If things go according to plans, the small town - the headquarter of the religious cultIskcon - will boast the biggest Vedic temple of the world.
The temple with a height of 340 feet has been named Chandrodaya Mandir and in its completion will be a grand spectacle, bigger than the Hagia Sophia of Istanbul. The first phase of the temple is being built by Alfred Ford, the great grandson of the founder of the Ford Motor Company, Henry Ford.
Sources said construction is under way and the temple will be completed in 2016, the year Iskcon - the religious order founded by Srila Prabhupada - is set to celebrate its the 50th anniversary. The temple would have 6,750,00 square feet of covered area, of which Alfred Ford himself is building 4,250,00 square feet area. The remaining 2,500,00 square feet area would be built with subscriptions from the public for which an appeal was made on Monday. Each devotee can contribute towards the construction of just one square feet of the temple.
Talking to the media on Monday, Ford said why he was taking particular interest to help build the Chandrodaya Temple. "It is coming up at the birthplace of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and is my tribute to Srila Prabhupada, who initiated me into Iskcon. Way back in 1976, Prabhupada had asked me, a young disciple then, to build this temple of his dreams. I am grateful to Lord Krishna that I have been able to do it," he said.
Interestingly, his wife Sharmila is a Bengali from Naihati. "Nearly four million visitors come to Mayapur annually. We hope that after the Chandrodaya Temple comes up, this will go up to 10 million. Alongside the temple, we are also building a modern township to accommodate this extra influx into Mayapur," added Ford.
Unlike conventional Hindu temple structures, the Chandrodaya Temple is full of huge columns and domes, representative of Western architecture. A 75-feet domed planetarium theatre, the largest of its kind in India, will be one of the unique features of the temple that is being built with imported stainless steel.
Sources said the temple was apparently prophesized 500 years ago by Lord Nityananda, a close associate of Shri Chaitanya. "Apart from being a place of worship, it will also be a centre for Vedic knowledge, culture and science. The temple is being built at an estimated cost of 75 million USD. In 2016, the first phase of the temple will be completed. It will be sometime before the second phase is completed thereafter," Ford said.
Iskcon also plans to invite the likes of Queen Elizabeth and the US President apart from the President of India for the opening of the first phase of the temple.
Though the plan was initially launched in 2006, however, certain changes in design had to be made as advised by the then state government because the area is flood prone. The earlier plan was grander than the present scale, said sources. On being asked if he had any investment plans in Bengal, Ford promptly replied that though he didn't have any at present, he might think about setting up a nanotechnology park in the near future.
Mayapur dostanie największą świątynię wedyjską
TNN
Świątynia o wysokości 340 stóp została nazwana Ćandrodaya Mandir i ukończona będzie czymś niezwykłym, większa niż Hagia Sophia w Stambule.

Ford keen on tech park in West Bengal
TNN
KOLKATA: For business-hungry Bengal, it will be some real good news if the scion of the Ford family, Alfred Ford, sets his eyes on Bengal.
On a mission to set up the world's largest Vedic temple at the Iskcon headquarters, he's currently shuttling between Mayapur and Kolkata. But it is learnt that he is also thinking of a business plan in the state that has been at the back of his mind for some years now. It might sound unbelievable but it's true that this representative of one of the world's largest and richest companies comes to the city at least twice a year.
"With a guru maharaj and wife, both from Bengal, isn't it natural that Bengal has shaped my life and spirituality to the greatest extent?" said Ford, who was initiated to Iskcon in 1974 by Srila Prabhupada, the founder of the spiritual order.
Perhaps this has brought him close to the large Indian diaspora settled in the US, most of whom are at the helm of businesses and sciences there. One such friend is a lady who graduated from Harvard and went on to start her own nano technology empire in the US.
"Together we have often discussed if we could start a nano-tech park in India. If it works out, hers will be the R&D and mine the funds, but one thing is certain, it will be in Bengal, because I know this part of India better than the rest," Ford said.
Apart from a nanotechnology park in Bengal, he is keen on developing healthcare facilities too. "I believe that we can set up some healthcare infrastructure for the benefit of the people. Nano sciences are being increasingly used for bio-medical advancement and so if we set up the nano technology park, some services from here might be focussed towards healthcare," felt Ford.
However, such business plans will definitely have to wait for a couple of years since a large part of Alfred Ford's funds are being spent for building the Chandrodaya Temple at Mayapur. The first phase of the 340 feet high temple will be opened to the public in 2016, when ISKCON completes 50 years of its existence. Ford is spending nearly $75 million to build the first phase of the temple that looks very different from the conventional Hindu temples with its domes, columns and turrets.
"The design was altered several times since we conceived it in 2006 and finally we have arrived at this international design, because ISKCON followers come from all over the world. We wanted to do away with pillars as far as possible so that the temple can accomodate more people, who can gather and dance to the chanting of Hare Krishna."
When asked how it was being married to a Bengali woman, Ford said: "Bengali bhajans play at my home all the time. My wife Sharmila and mom-in-law keep reading Tagore and I got initiated to Tagore through them. Bengalis have a better IQ than most other communities of the world. They are intellectually oriented and I marvel at their depth of thinking," Ford said.
However, he rued the fact that he is yet to pick up enough Bengali to read the 'Chaitanya Charitamrita' and other works on the Bhakti movement in original Bengali.
Over the past 40 years that he has been visiting the city, Ford has marvelled at its transformation. He feels that Kolkata is on the right track to development since the growth has now spread to the east towards Rajarhat. "I look at the teeming multitudes of buildings and facilities coming up there and to me the picture is no different from what I see in other developed countries of the world," he says. The old city however never ceases to fascinate him with its, "heritage look." He feels that it will be some time before problems regarding infrastructure in the "old city", will be fixed.
Ford zainteresowany parkiem technologicznym w Bengalu Zachodnim
TNN
KOLKATA: W głodnym inwestycji Bengalu będzie to będzie naprawę dobra wiadomość, jeśli Alfred Ford, potomek rodziny Ford, zwróci na niego uwagę.
Jednak takie plany na pewno będą musiały poczekać kilka lat, gdyż znaczna część funduszy Alfreda Forda służy do budowania śwatyni Chandrodaya w Mayapur.
Moja żona Sharmila i teściowa stale czytają Tagore’a i ja zacząłem czytać Tagore’a dzięki nim.
